2011 PSLE Summary of Results

Introduction

The Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) assesses the achievement of learners who have completed the first seven years of the 10-year basic education programme. Candidates were examined on seven syllabuses: English, Mathematics, Science, Setswana, Social Studies, Agriculture and Religious & Moral Education (REME). English and Setswana consist of two components each: a multiple choice paper and an extended writing paper. Agriculture has one component consisting of open-ended questions. The rest of the subjects have one multiple choice paper each consisting of sixty items.This report presents a summary of the 2011 PSLE results. It reports performance at national, district, and city/town council levelsand by subject and gender.

2011 JCE Summary of Results

Introduction

The Junior Certificate Examination (JCE) assesses the achievement of learners who have completed the last three years of the 10-year Basic Education Programme. The 10-year basic education curriculum blueprint outlines subject specific learning outcomes and skill areas that cut across all subject areas. Candidates were examined on 21 syllabuses through 49 written components and 11 course work/practical components. Out of these syllabuses, 6 were available only for private candidates. The 2011 JCE is the last examination for the curriculum that was implemented in 1996 as part of the implementation of the Revised National Policy on Education. From 2012, candidates will be examined on the revised curriculum that was implemented in 2010. A total of 206 school centres and 45 private centres registered candidates for the 2011 JCE. The JCE examination papers were administered from 7 November to 18 November 2011. Marking of examination scripts started on 29 November 2011 and was completed on the 16 December 2011.

2011 BGCSE Summary of Results

Introduction

In 2011, 27 fully localised Botswana General Certificate of Secondary Education (BGCSE) examination syllabuses were available to schools. For other syllabuses such as Christian Religious Education, Additional Mathematics and Statistics, schools offered the General Certificate of Education (GCE) O Level examinations as in previous years. During this session candidates from five centres sat for the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) French syllabus. BGCSE is a syllabus based examination. Each syllabus is graded on an 8 point scale from A* to G. Candidates who fail to reach the standard required for Grade G are unclassified and no result is reported on the certificate. GCE O level syllabuses are graded on a 6 point scale from A* to E.
