2017 BGCSE RESULTS RELEASED
Botswana Examinations Council (BEC) has released the 2017 Botswana General Certificate for Secondary Education (BGCSE) examination results. A total of 37 251 candidates wrote the 2017 examination showing an increase of 5.04% in candidature compared to the 2016 cohort of 35 465. There were 15 590 (41.85%) male candidates and 21 661 (58.15%) female candidates sitting for the 2017 BGCSE Examination.
The 2017 BGCSE examination was administered to 25 802 (69.27%) candidates from government and government-aided schools compared to 25 016 (70.5%) in 2016 and 11 449 (30.74%) private candidates compared to 10 449 (29.5%) in 2016. The private candidates’ category included 604 (1.62%) Back-to-School candidates, 1 794 (4.82%) candidates from private schools and 9 655 (25.92%) private candidates (including BOU candidates).
Since the BGCSE is a subject-based certificate with no aggregation, the measure used to gauge the performance of candidates is the proportion of candidates who were awarded Grade C or better in 5 syllabi. This year 24.05% candidates from government and government-aided schools were awarded Grade C or better in 5 syllabi compared to 25.46% in 2016. This shows a slight decline of 1.41%, indicating that the two cohorts were of more or less the same quality.
